People in a variety of professions may be at risk for Benzene exposure in the workplace. Some employees are aware that they are in the presence of Benzene and are typically trained in the necessary safety procedures. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's regulations Part 1910.1028(h) "Personal protective clothing and equipment shall be worn where appropriate to prevent eye contact and limit dermal exposure to liquid benzene. Protective clothing and equipment shall be provided by the employer at no cost to the employee and the employer shall assure its use where appropriate. Eye and face protection shall meet the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.133."

Various standards have been set in regards to the amount of Benzene a worker can be exposed to. OSHA recommends that workers not be exposed to more than 1 ppm (part per million) averaged in an 8 hour work day, while NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) recommends that workers limit exposure to 0.1 ppm averaged in a 10 hour work day. Studies have been conducted in Great Britain and China which report that limited exposure to a few parts per million of Benzene is enough to cause cancer and other serious medical conditions.
